The Challenge

The Western Local Land Services Region covers 40% of NSW and much of this land is farmed organically with innovative, sustainable grazing practices being implemented all the time. For this reason the Western Landcare Forum Committee decided in late 2016 that the Western Landcare Forum should not only be an opportunity for landholders to learn of new management practices but also be the forum to discuss and plan region wide branding and provenance regarding the regions sustainably and ethically produced food. But as a team we only had limited experience in provenance marketing.

The Solution

The Committee through their various networks became aware of the Farming Together 2017 National Forum. Farming Together Forum was to provide knowledge and materials to help farmers collaborate, co-operate, and use collective strategies. The forum assisted producers interested in forming or expanding a farmer-based group and also had multiple breakout sessions on provenance marketing. This was precisely the learning opportunity that the Forum Committee needed. Local Landcare Coordinator Henry Gregory represented Western Landcare NSW at the forum to seize this opportunity.

The Impact

At the forum Henry learnt numerous tips and tricks on how to build a brand around Western produce. Henry was also able to network with people such as Michael Wohlstadt who was involved in the creation of the “Barossa” brand and marketing campaigns. From the event Henry was able to present many useful ideas about marketing the Western Region as sustainable and ethically produced food and these ideas have been incorporated into the forum itself.
